Principal's Corner

I hope you are enjoying a safe and fun-filled summer break. Hagemann’s staff is busy preparing for the 2010-11 school year. The HPO will sponsor an ice cream social on August 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. Parents will be able to drop off school supplies in their child’s classroom. The HPO will also have the supply kits ready for pick up that were purchased in the spring of last school year. Of course, ice cream will be served in the cafeteria to give you something tasty to nibble on while talking with friends. Our students had the opportunity to meet their new teachers in May on Switch Day. The ice cream social is not intended to be a meet the teacher night. This evening is designed to give you the opportunity to drop off supplies and get caught up with friends you may not have had the opportunity to see over the summer.

The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010. Our instructional school day will begin promptly at 8:45 a.m., and students will be released at 3:30 p.m.

Our Parent Curriculum Night will be held on Thursday, Aug. 19. Curriculum night will allow all of our parents the opportunity to meet their child’s new teacher and receive important information on their child’s grade level curriculum. We will start the evening with a short Hagemann Parent Organization presentation to meet the new officers, receive information on upcoming events, and approve the budget for the 2010-11 school year.  Three different sessions will be held to allow parents to meet with multiple teachers, if necessary. The evening will be scheduled as follows:

Session 1 6 - 6:25 p.m. HPO beginning of the year meeting/approval of budget
Session 2 6:30 - 6:55 p.m. Session one
Session 3 7 - 7:25 p.m. Session two
Session 4 7:25 - 8 p.m. Session three

Each school day will continue to begin with a half hour intervention block to address areas of academic need or areas for enrichment opportunities for our students. These academic areas will be identified with the use of Developmental Reading Assessments, AIMSweb Reading and Mathematics Assessments, and Tungsten Reading and Math Assessments. During this half hour, most staff in the building will be assisting students in strengthening targeted areas. For students not requiring remediation, staff will enrich their skills in the areas of Communication Arts or Mathematics. We feel this time was in part responsible for the increase in our Tungsten scores across the  board last year.

The RTI half hour will begin promptly at 8:45 a.m. We want to catch our students when they are fresh and ready to begin their day. For this reason, we are asking parents dropping off their child to please do so by 8:35 a.m. This will assure your child will be able to get to class on time and be ready for this very important part of his/her academic day.

This is a part of our ongoing effort to continue to improve the education experience your child receives here at Hagemann. Washington Middle school staff always speak very highly of the level of academic preparedness of our Hagemann Students. We are very proud of our students’ academic accomplishments. Our goal is to provide the best possible environment and instruction to facilitate your child moving on to middle school with skills that will match up to any middle school student in the State of Missouri.

We appreciate your help and support in making this a reality for your child.

I hope you enjoy the remainder of your summer! The entire Hagemann staff is looking forward to a new and successful year.

Scott Andrews
